Complete Guide to Progressive Overload for Beginners
T Tim G-Trackt July 3, 2026
What is Progressive Overload?
Progressive overload is a fundamental strength training principle where you gradually increase your workout load over time. Without it, your muscles have no reason to grow stronger or bigger.
How to Apply It
- Add Weight — Increase weight by 2.5-5kg each week
- Add Repetitions — If you can't increase weight yet, aim for 1-2 extra reps
- Add Sets — Add 1 set per exercise
- Increase Frequency — Train the same muscle 2x per week instead of 1x
Avoid These Mistakes
- Increasing weight too fast — high injury risk
- Sacrificing form — heavy weight is useless with bad technique
- Not tracking — use G-Trackt to log your progress
